President Bush pushed back Wednesday against Sen. John Kerry’s criticism of his handling of Iraq, saying, “Sure, it’s gone on way longer than we expected. Yeah, casualties have been much higher and will continue to increase. And, okay, it’s costing us billions more dollars than anyone every imagined... But I think I know what I’m doing when it comes to winning this war.”

Bush used a re-election rally in Albuquerque, N.M., to sharply reject a proposal from Kerry, his flip-flopping Democrat opponent in the presidential election, to begin to withdraw troops from Iraq within six months of taking office.

“We all want the mission to be completed as quickly as possible. But let’s face it –- this war ain’t going away. Fact is, we could be there for years. And until I’ve wiped out every one of our foreign enemies –- or killed every young American trying –- I’m going to be real stubborn about this. You see, I just don’t like to admit I’m wrong. And when ‘Bush comes to shove,’ ha, ha, ha, I’ll use the blood of others to make my point... As someone who shirked his own responsibilities and has never truly experienced the horrors of war, I think that that’s a reasonable thing to do,” the president said.

“The mission is not going to be completed as quickly as possible if the enemy thinks we will be removing a substantial number of troops in six months,” the President continued, “these things take time: I ask you -- was Vietnam won in six months? Huh? Oh wait, bad example...”

Phil Singer, a spokesman for Kerry, said Bush would “say or do anything to avoid a discussion about his failed policy in Iraq.”

“And believe me,” Singer continued, “I work for Kerry, so I know plenty about a politician who will say anything...”
