The Campaign In the USA

Three campaign finance watchdog groups have filed a complaint accusing a group of Vietnam veterans of violating the campaign finance law by airing an ad that challenges Kerry’s military record.

The ad by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth violates a federal ban on the use of unlimited donations, often referred to as “soft money,” to influence federal elections.

The group accuses Kerry of lying about his war record and betraying fellow veterans by later protesting the conflict. Veterans who served with Kerry on his swift boat have said the group is lying, and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona has called the ad “dishonest and dishonorable

Mike Russell, a spokesman for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, said the ad is legal because (get this!) it does not tell viewers which candidate they should vote for in the presidential race.

“Sure, it’s false advertising, but the ads are not meant to influence the presidential election,” Russell said.

The Bush campaign has pointedly refused to repudiate the campaign. Mr. Bush who “served” his country stateside in the Texas Air National Guard, has denied that the ads smack of desperation. “Look,” the president said while chuckling and gorfing down a pretzel, “he can take my military record to task. That is, he could, if those documents of my service in the Texas Air National Guard hadn’t been ‘inadvertently destroyed.’”

Rumor is out that the Kerry campaign are developing a counter series of ads that accuse Bush of lying about his cocaine abuse and drinking habits. The ads, which feature testimonials from Bush’s old partying buddies, question the President’s legendary frat-boy past, “He says he used to snort a gram a night,” says one of George’s old drinking pals, “but I never saw him toot anything other than his own horn.”
