The “mostly sizzle but no steak” feud between the Bush and Kerry campaigns over a TV ad that denigrates Sen. John Kerry’s Vietnam war record moved toward the “getting interesting” point Friday as the Democratic nominee (with pen in hand and frown on face) filed a complaint with federal officials that accused the president’s re-election campaign of breaking the law.

Kerry’s complaint to the Federal Elections Commission about the ads produced and aired by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth alleges "overwhelming evidence” that the veterans group is “in league with Satan and the Bush-Cheney Campaign,” Kerry spokeswoman Allison Dobson told NBC News... “Oh, and that Larry Thurlow guy is a paranoid liar and a bellowing fart.”

The complaint comes at the end of a week in which Kerry himself accused Bush of having the Swift Boat veterans do “his dirty work” and media reports have exposed connections between Bush, his family and other high-profile Texas politicians. In a Thursday speech, the Massachusetts senator said: “The fact that the president won’t denounce what they’re up to tells you everything you need to know... There are still other things you need to know: Such as my baffling reluctance to face this whole ad thing when it first came up; my plan on the war in Iraq, and stuff like that. But I won three Purple Hearts, two Pink Stars, one Yellow Moon, and Green Clovers... Oh wait, that was what I had for breakfast... Lucky Charms –- they’re magically delicious!”

Steve Schmidt of the Bush campaign said charges that Bush is in league with the veterans’ group are “totally and completely false. Hey, my feelings are hurt. What a nasty thing to imply. George Bush has absolutely nothing to do with veterans. Never has. And never will. End of discussion.”
