The Campaign In the USA

Aug 5 / 2004

A collection of more than 20 “prominent musicians” from John (Old Fogy) Fogerty to Bruce (Big in the 70’s) Springsteen, dusted off their walking canes and wheelchairs and joined forces Wednesday calling for President Bush’s ouster and announcing an unprecedented series of fund-raising concerts across nine swing states.

“My hip may be wonky, and my knees are sore, plus I got the bursitis, but I feel this is one of the most critical elections in the USA. And I was born in the USA, and... Sorry, what was I saying?” Springsteen told The Associated Press in the most overtly political statement of his career. “Oh, and I also can’t eat hot food because it inflames my bowels.”

Springsteen was joined by a collection of wrinkly performers that essentially have nothing better to do with all their free time and who refuse to give up the fading limelight.

The line up will include classic rockers John Mellencamp, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Van Zandt, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne. The artists, touring under the “Geriatric Rockers Waving Their Clenched Fists & Voting for Change” banner, will play 34 shows in 28 cities between Oct. 1-8: If they have the strength!

Springsteen’s concerns and commitment were shared by other performers, including Bonnie Raitt.

“It’s a lot of cities and touring, but if we can all get in our nap times and keep chugging back the Geritol we might be able to pull this off.” Granny Raitt told The AP. “I have bunions and corns. Oh, and we’ve all agreed that the show’s will start at noon and end by 4 pm so we can all go out for a nice dinner.”

The shows, which launch Oct. 1 in Pennsylvania, will take an unusual approach: The musicians will likely sleep through the events while fans will get to wallow in the pleasure of watching their aged heroes as they then wake up cranky and tell the audience what’s wrong with the world today and why their generation was the best one ever.

“I can’t wait until we get to Florida!” Old Man Mellencamp is reported to have said before walking into a chair and falling down.
