Campaign Journal Who won the debate? Was it John Kerry on points? Was it George Bush for doing an admirable imitation of a deer caught in the headlights? And just how many times did President Bush say being the president is hard work? Does he need a vacation? Why didn’t he use all his time to speak? Was he being considerate for the network’s sake because he didn’t want things to run too long? If so, we don’t have to worry about his speech should he ever win an Academy Award. How many times did Senator Kerry say, “I can get the job done?” Was it more than Mr. Bush’s “the enemy is determined to defeat us?” Can these two men share a stage without driving each other crazy? Does George Bush really want to put a leash on his daughters? Is this an idea that will excite and please young and old American men/voters? Did John Kerry exaggerate about the 200 billion dollar war because George did the same about the 100,000 Iraqis? Or was it vice-versa? Is there anything these guys won’t say? Why did the network break rule 9. a (v) – “there will be no TV cut-aways to any candidate who is not responding to a question while another candidate is answering a question” Was it just so we could get the pleasure of watching Mr. Bush smirk, roll his eyes, sigh, and look generally pissed off? What do you think John and George are writing when their opponent is talking? They certainly seem to be scribbling away furiously. Could it be a shopping list? Does George need to remember to pick up milk on his way home after the debate? Does John have to stop off at the vets to get the cat’s worm pills? Or are they writing down pithy comebacks like “oh yeah?” and “says who?” Even more importantly – should parents listen to what Dr. Phil has to say about horny teenagers? Is puce a good color for fall? And is the rock band Franz Ferdinand the best thing to come out Glasgow since... well, more importantly – has anything good ever come out of Glasgow? These questions and more will be answered by Spin Doctors and Polls in the following days.
