The Campaign In the USA

Oct 4 / 2004

Tomorrow's vice presidential rumble, which both campaigns once presumed would be a carnival sideshow to the presidential race, has assumed Circus Big-Tent importance, with Republicans depending on Vice President Cheney to use his dark powers to halt the GOP’s slide in momentum.

While Republicans are know acknowledging that President Bush would have come off better if “he had dressed as a mime and not said anything” in his televised encounter with Democratic nominee John F. Kerry, GOP strategists said Cheney's aim is to return public attention to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and to pin them on Edwards and Kerry.

A Republican official involved in Cheney's preparation for his encounter with Sen. John Edwards (N.C.) said the vice president has been getting into debate shape, “he’s been practicing his incantations and biting the heads off of mice, he’s ready.”

Kerry's aides are hoping that at the debate in Cleveland, Edwards will summon his skills as a sleazy trial lawyer to piss the Dickster off so badly that he has yet another heart attack, or at least wets his pants.

Vice presidential debates historically have not been consequential in presidential contests, and given that the VEEPs will be going against reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond... well, ‘nuff said...
