The Campaign In the USA

Sept 15 / 2004

President “Oh That George!” Bush, accused by Democrats of joining the National Guard to avoid going to Vietnam and then shirking his duty, told Guard members that he was proud of his service but did not address lingering questions about his record.

“I’m just too tired to lie today,” the President said.

Instead Bush sought to shift the focus to his Democratic presidential rival, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, a decorated Vietnam War veteran (for those of you who forgot this fact). He accused Kerry of wavering on funding for the war in Iraq (we’ve heard this before as well, haven’t we?) and warned against choosing a commander-in-chief who would spend more time worrying about his hair than the war.

“I have less hair, therefore have more time to spend on the war,” George decried.

My wily pal did not directly address the controversy surrounding gaps in his service in the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s. But Bush said: “Look, I can’t account for where I was every second of my life, so get off my ass!”

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Bush did not address the charges by Democrats because he hasn’t yet told the President what it is he should say about them. “We still have to spin this and then write a speech for him... That’s when he’ll tell you where he was and what he did.“
