Campaign Journal So since I asked George (September 6 th), I figured I’d also ask Senator Kerry, “What does being a successful politician mean to you?” Kerry said that being a successful politician meant going to work with a comb and a hairbrush – “Just in case I need both.” That it meant carrying an air of confidence and getting the job done with a sense of accomplishment. That it meant attention to detail and people skills. That it meant giving a 110% even if that statement was sort of ridiculous and misleading. It meant not flipping, or flopping, or flip flopping, or flop flipping for that matter... It meant doing the right thing, unless doing the wrong thing was what people wanted him to do. It meant being a liberal but still opposing gay marriage. It meant not offering any explicit endorsement of the Kyoto treaty. It meant biting his tongue and rolling back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans (such as himself, his wife and his would-be vice president). It meant he has thoughts on the war on Iraq but doesn’t feel like sharing them. It meant secretly admiring the emotional manipulation and dirty politics of Republicans and wondering how Democrats could successfully employ such tactics. It meant fighting for your country and then fighting against your country for having to fight for your country in the first place. It meant hanging out with rock stars and actors, even if they are the most boring, idiotic and banal people on the earth. It meant keeping God out of it – to a point, that is. It meant trying not to answer the tough questions, keeping your opinions to yourself and hoping that being the lesser of two evils might actually pay off. It meant secretly wanting to strangle those jerks who call him Herman Munster or Lurch, or even worse – a Frenchman. It meant quashing that bubbling internal rage and pretending to smile. And most importantly, it meant saying whatever it took to win. Because, hey, people look up to him.Sept 15 / 2004 |
