Campaign Journal Florida’s highest court ruled Friday that independent presidential candidate and all round party pooper, Ralph “Darth” Nader, must be allowed to compete in the 2004 election in the state, delivering a possible boost to President Bush’s re-election chances. And Republicans everywhere are thrilled to bits. “I love that little nerd and spoiler,” said President George Bush, “Yeah, Ralph’s deluded, but boy, is he good for our party. Hey, let’s send the skinny goof a box of chocolates and some roses!” Hey, every state has an obligation to run elections that are not only fair, but (and this is an important but) also “appear fair” to the average voter and after the laugh riot of 2000, Florida's officials should understand this better than anyone. But they don’t... Its top elections’ officer, Glenda Hood, (aka: Katherine Harris II) is certainly giving the strong impression that she is manipulating the rules to help re-elect her boss's brother. After her maneuvers this week to get Ralphie on the ballot, (not to mention spending a “girls night out” with Katherine and getting some valuable tips) one has to wonder if she can be trusted to run an impartial election: And the answer to that is a big “no freaking way!” She recently conducted a highly suspect voting-roll purge of felons. The voters who were to be taken off the list included more than 22,000 African-Americans, who generally vote heavily Democratic, but just 61 Hispanics, who tend to favor Republicans in Florida. What a plan! What a lady! After all it worked before, and if it’s broken but works, why bother fixing it? Sept 18 / 2004 |
